Strollers

We’ve taken all sorts of strollers to help take our kids through Europe. Umbrella Strollers, Double Strollers. Some we’ve bought new, some we’ve bought used off FB marketplace. Some people really use their strollers hard…some people don’t use them at all. You can find some good deals on occasion that way. Things to look for: Lightweight construction for maneuvering through crowded streets Compact folding mechanism for effortless storage and transportation, whether that’s hopping into a London taxi, Rome subway, or German train. As our kids have gotten older…we still use a stroller as a simple easy way to carry multiple bags. They are awesome, you can take them onto plane flights easily. I’ll link to one of our favorite strollers.

Car Seats

We at DIY Family Travel usually recommend trains for traveling through Europe, but they are not 100% always the best solution, especially if you want to explore away from the cities. One of the things that turned us away initially renting a car was the cost of renting car seats - yikes! Our travel wasn’t focused around cars and the idea of carrying around a carseat in order to facilitate 10% of the vacation did not seem like a good idea. But I also didn’t like the idea of paying an additional $100 for three kids and two days of rental car. Then a last minute search before one of our trips helped us find these guys: Mi-Fold Grab and Go Car Booster Seat Super small, lightweight, compliant with laws. You can buy them for cheaper than it would cost to rent a child-safety seat. We took them and loved them for our aged 5 and older kids. However…I can’t find them in stock anymore. Anywhere. I did some searching and couldn’t find out what happened. So I’ll link to a car seat that I’m super intrigued about - they’re called BubbleBum, and they are inflatable car seats that exceed all US and European car standards and regulations - however, I haven’t actually used them yet so I can’t comment personally on them, but (at time of writing) > 5k reviews and a 4.4 rating look pretty good to me. In the future, I will also link here to an article where we will discuss in greater detail our experiences with the patchwork of different countries’ laws regarding child safety belts.

Custom Child Travel Journals

One of the main reasons you take your kids to Europe is to help create memories and expose them to different cultures. We’ve found travel journals to be a great way to help children synthesize the countries you are exploring and note similarities and differences. There are lots of different types of travel journals out there but there wasn’t anything we really liked, so we made our own, which you (will be able to find) here.. They are now treasured keepsakes as it helps them remember the experiences we had as a family.
